He underwent two knee reconstructions in 12 months, forcing Tom to change his focus and acknowledge that sometimes ‘obstacles can create opportunities.’ Driven by purpose and backed by player knowledge he turned his hand to designing his first sporting product.

An early prototype was shortlisted for the NZ Best Design Awards and it was then he knew he was onto something special. With lots more work to be done, he began testing prototypes in Provincial, Super Rugby and International environments. Eventually, the multiple iterations morphed to become ‘Vitool’.
